I stopped by Hesperia, CA last Saturday 6/4/11 on the way to a brief trip to Albuquerque, NM. I pulled off on the Main Street east exit from the I-15 freeway. The first thing I noticed before exiting the freeway was the The SuperTarget logo on the west side of the freeway shouting from its position as the anchor store in the new High Desert Gateway shopping complex at Main Street and I-15. My next burning quest was to see the progress of the Walmart Supercenter which has been proposed for several years at the corner of Main Street and Escondido Avenue in Hesperia, CA. Well folks, I regret to announce that the construction that was supposed to start several months ago based on this Victor Valley Daily Press article, has not started at all – nothing but the same barren patch of land. The sign announcing the project appears to be missing as well. Has this project evaporated? A Google search for “Hesperia Walmart Supercenter” yielded no significant new news since the Victor Valley articles I mentioned a couple of posts back. Perhaps this future Walmart Supercenter is nothing but a Hesperian pipe dream never to be realized. Perhaps Walmart still views the location as a risk based on the lagging recession and unemployment. I think it will benefit that location greatly as the shopping alternatives in that location and Hesperia in general are very limited considering the population size.
