Walmart distribution center delayed until at least 2012

August 11, 2011 by Bill Fulton

Aug. 10–BARSTOW — Although Walmart broke ground in July on two supercenters in Victorville and Hesperia, it still has no plans to start a distribution center in Barstow until 2012 or later.

Walmart originally announced a plan in 2005 for a food distribution center on Barstow Industrial Park along Lenwood Road. The center would serve supercenters in the Southern California region and would create about 500 fulltime jobs. But the distribution center was stalled in February when local protests and the economy delayed the progress of the Victor Valley supercenters. The Barstow distribution center itself faced two different lawsuits stemming from environmental concerns, but both were dismissed last year.
